Hang around our offices long enough and you’ll probably hear some of our technicians discussing furnace and AC faults. Yes, we are known throughout the Salt Lake City region as first-rate plumbers. But we also offer furnace and AC services. Those services include addressing faults.
The thing about furnace and AC faults is that you should never ignore them. While some are minor and most don’t represent a significant risk of danger, you can never be sure without understanding what is causing a fault. And because some faults could create serious or dangerous circumstances, even the smallest of them should not be ignored.
What is a fault?
Sometimes referred to simply as ‘furnace faults’, a fault with a furnace or AC unit is any issue or malfunction that inhibits proper and safe operation. Modern units with electronic control systems make diagnosing most faults easier because they provide digital codes that a technician can look up in a service manual. But without a manual or a way to access the codes, a homeowner has no way of diagnosing a fault.
How many kinds of faults are possible?
Customers sometimes ask us how many types of faults are possible. It’s a really tough question to answer because there are so many variables. But let’s say there are at least a few dozen. Here are some of the most common:
- Filter Issues – Dirty or clogged filters can create problems for both furnaces and AC units by reducing airflow. Inhibiting airflow negatively affects an HVAC unit’s efficiency.
- Electrical Problems – Faults related to electrical problems are fairly common. Think of things like tripped breakers, broken wiring, and so on. Some electrical problems are minor; others can be serious.
- Thermostat Issues – Thermostats are generally reliable over long periods of time. But there are never any guarantees. Thermostats can fail because of faulty wiring or malfunctioning components.
- Ignition Problems – Ignition problems are an issue for gas-powered furnaces. Unfortunately, issues with a unit’s ignition system can be dangerous. These types of problems should be addressed right away.
- Blower Failure – Both furnaces and AC units require blowers to circulate air. Blowers fail from time to time. When they do, air doesn’t circulate.
- Frozen Coils – When it comes to AC units, one of the more common issues we see is the frozen coil. Low refrigerant, poor airflow, and other issues can cause frozen coils.
There are plenty of additional faults we could discuss here, but it’s time to move on. Needless to say, any malfunction or issue preventing your HVAC unit from working properly needs to be addressed. Even if a fault isn’t inherently dangerous, it makes your life much more uncomfortable because your house is not heating or cooling properly.
Should I call you immediately?
If you live in the greater Salt Lake City region and are experiencing any type of furnace or AC fault, consider calling us. Do not hesitate if your fault includes any of the following three things:
- Gas, carbon monoxide, or electrical
- Persistent or recurring issues
- Significant water leaks (for AC units)
All three types of issues suggest a serious problem that could be dangerous. Never mess around with these types of things. For other types of faults, you may be able to wait a while and avoid higher charges for emergency services.
